Islamic Mystical Poetry – reading list General Material • Michael Sells (trans. and ed.): Early Islamic Mysticism (New York, ) Subtitled Sufi, Qur'an, Mi'raj, Poetic and Theological Writings, this is the pre-eminent study of the early period of Islamic mysticism. Published posthumously, this book is a collection of Qabbani's love poems, with its pages split in two-- one side of the pages had Nizar's original poetry in Arabic, and on the other side were the English translations. All I can say is that I'm lucky that I can read Arabic, because the English translations did his words no justice/5.

A thoughtful book that starts with an intelligent overview of Sufi poetry, its forms and its images. The selections and translations vary in interest and subtlety. Some of the simpler poems do not rise above devotions-- hymns. The longer poems articulate much more complex relationships between poetry, love, and /5(18). One of the great minds of that period is ibn Rashiq al-Qairawani (d. /), the author of a standard book on the art of poetry entitled al-‘Umdah fi Mahasin al-Shi‘r wa Adabih. It is one of the fullest treatments of the technicalities of Arabic poetry and its principal kinds.

Like many pre-modern Arabic anthologies it aims at being both entertaining and informative. It ranges from the early Bedouin poems with their evocation of desert life to refined urban lyrical verse, from tender love poetry to sonorous eulogy or vicious lampoons, and from the heights of mystical rapture to the frivolity of comic verse.
